Đakovački vezovi – Đakovo Embroidery Festival
The Đakovo Embroidery Festival is the largest Croatian manifestation of authentic folklore.
The first Đakovo Embroidery Festival (Đakovački vezovi) was held in 1967 as a specific tourist and cultural event on the occasion of the International Year of Tourism, and is held every year in July. It performs authentic folklore, primarily from Slavonia, Baranja, Western Srijem, and other parts of Croatia, along with accompanying events – the opening of various exhibitions, equestrian events, and other cultural and tourist events. The event also has an international character, gathering approximately ten thousand participants from folklore groups from all over the world.
Various folklore events are also held, such as Small Embroidery Festival, Folk Church Singing, Opening Ceremony, Đakovo Region in Song and Dance, Guests in Song and Dance, Ceremonial Procession through the Streets of Đakovo, International Folklore Festival, Croatian Folklore Festival, Slavonia and Baranja Folklore Festival, and the closing program “Slavonia, Noble Land” with a selection of the best-worn folk costumes. The selection of the girl and the groom (the selection of the groom was introduced in later years) in the most beautiful costume has been an integral part of Vezovi since the beginning, in 1967.
Equestrian sports enthusiasts find pleasure at the hippodrome where an international equestrian competition is held every year.
The central events are the opening ceremony, performances by folklore groups and, most importantly, a ceremonial procession through the streets of the city and the closing ceremony of the event called “Slavonia, noble land” with a rich musical program and the Selection for the best-worn folk costume.
The entire city participates in the event, and the awareness of the importance of this event and its cultural and artistic significance is ingrained in all residents of the Đakovo area.
