We also have our cattle for the race!

The Slavonian-Srijem Podolian cattle are an almost forgotten autochthonous breed of cattle that is slowly but surely returning to the scene. Their "disadvantage" is that they are not adapted for express production. Namely, they need at least two years to reach maturity. And this is where our story begins...

Podolian cattle came to our areas, Slavonia, Srijem and Baranja, quite a long time ago - 2000 years ago with the Roman legions. Over 90% representation in Slavonia in the middle of the 20th century. up to about 500 head in 2021. year. It took us less than fifty years to bring it to the brink of existence.

What is the problem? Mechanization and more productive breeds of cattle slowly pushed the podolce out of Slavonian households, which they served for centuries as help in the fields, for pulling carts, and of course as food on the table.

Finally, podolian cattle has returned to the pastures of Slavonia and Baranja, and you can taste it in the Citadela in Vardarac. What distinguishes these animals is the fact that they require minimal investment, do not need stables (only a shelter is enough in winter), love free grazing and are very resistant.

The owner of the Citadel, Silard Lazar, tells us that the podolian cattles have been in their family for generations and that he kept them until now for sentimental reasons. But this, initially, experiment with the restaurant gave him new hope that podolian cattle has a bright future in Slavonia and Baranja. He bought new young podolian cattles with which he plans to start more serious cultivation, to ensure the survival of this variety, and the food for Citadel that set it apart from the others.
