During carnival season the “Bu\u0161e” (Bushe) masked men and women walk thru the villages in Baranja, as well as Croatian villages in Hungary. So called “Terrible” Stra\u0161ne Bushe wear wooden zoomorphic masks with horns, inverted furs, clappers, trumpets and clappers, while “Beautiful” Lipe Bushe are dressed in festive folk costumes, often as the opposite sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Petara\u010dke Bu\u0161e”<\/a>, one of the most cheerful and colorful carnival programs with a masquerade ball, is traditionally held in Baranjsko Petrovo Selo, near the town of Beli Manastir and the Hungarian village of Beremend, and you can visit this carnival over four days: the children’s program on February 4 and for the three-day finale on February 11. until February 13, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Busha (Busha) are traditional “terrible” masks similar to Zvon\u010dari (bell ringers) in the Croatian northern Adriatic and Krampus masks in the Alpine regions, which you don’t really need to be afraid of because their only, centuries-old, ” task” is to chase away the winter evil spirits and summon the much-desired spring! Bu\u0161e can also be seen in Baranja during Carnival time, locally named Fa\u0161ange, and in Hungary they are protected by UNESCO as intangible heritage.
