The biggest carnival event in Baranja will once again bring together the “Beauty” and “Beasty” Bu\u0161e (Lipe i Stra\u0161ne Bu\u0161e) as well es regions best bagpipe players.<\/p>\n

The program begins on February 9 with an opening conference and panel discussion on the position of bagpipes and bagpipe players in Europe and Croatia at the Museum of Slavonia in Osijek. On the same day, the international coalition of bagpipe players will perform a gala concert program in the church of Saints Peter and Paul in Topolje (Baranja) and treat visitors to, among other things, the sounds of Croatian, Hungarian, Bulgarian, French, Scottish and Macedonian bagpipes.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the carnival program is on February 10, when the Baranja “Bu\u0161e” (Bushe) start their procession to chase away winter and call for spring. The procession starts from Stipe \u0110urin Square in Dra\u017e and moves along the streets of Dra\u017e and Gaji\u0107. In Gaji\u0107, pipers and masked Bu\u0161e men and women visit the house of the late Baranja piper Marko Drventi\u0107, after which pipers will “set the streets on fire”.<\/p>\n

On the same day, in the evening, the bagpipers will hold a second concert program at the Ethnographic Museum in Moh\u00e1cs (Baranya, Hungary), while in Dubo\u0161evica, the craziest masquerade ball of these carnivals begins with the “Aura” band.<\/p>\n

On February 11, we will say goodbye to the bagpipers, and the very next day, February 12, the masked Bu\u0161e continue their mad pursuit to chase away winter in Topolje.<\/p>\n

On February 13, while the Bu\u0161e are still busy in Topolje, in Dra\u017e and Gaji\u0107, the carnival procession of riders and horse drawn carriages starts. The 2024 “Fa\u0161ange” program ends with the “burning and lightning” of the streets in Dra\u017e on Stipe \u0110urin Square with music and bean-goulash for all participants and guests.<\/p>\n\n\n

Fun-facts about “Bu\u0161a” masks<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bu\u0161a (Busha) are traditional “terrible” masks similar to Zvon\u010dari (bell ringers) in the Croatian norhern Adriatic and Krampus masks in the Alpine regions, which you don’t really need to be afraid of because their only, centuries-old, “task” is to chase away the winter evil spirits and summon the much-desired spring! Bu\u0161e can also be seen in Baranja during Carnival time, locally named Fa\u0161ange, and in Hungary they are protected by UNESCO as intangible heritage. During the Ottoman conquests of Hungarian and Croatian Danube region in the 16th and 17th centuries, it is believed that it was the masked Bu\u0161ars who successfully intimidated the Turkish troops and forced them to flee, thereby liberating Baranja.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
