The 31st manifestation of \u201c\u0110akova\u010dki bu\u0161ari\u201c<\/a> will take place in \u0110akovo on February 22. and 23., 2025. \u201c\u0110akova\u010dki bu\u0161ari\u201c is the biggest carnival manifestation in eastern Croatia and it consists of \u201cBu\u0161arenje\u201c (February 22.) – a walk along the \u0110akovo corso street along with a presentation and sale of traditional and autochthonous products, street performers; painters, jugglers, stilt walkers, clowns (in the morning hours), and the central event of \u201c\u0110akova\u010dki bu\u0161ari\u201d, which is a carnival procession (in the afternoon). As a part of the procession, carnival horseback riding will also take place (February 23.).<\/p>\n

In the time of carnival season, Bu\u0161e, masked paraders, roam through Baranja. During this time, known as Fa\u0161ange, they visit villages of Baranja as well as Croatian villages in Hungary. The fearsome Bu\u0161e wear wooden zoomorphic masks with horns, turned-out sheepskin coats, trumpets and rattles, while the \u201clipe\u201c (beautiful) Bu\u0161e are dressed in festive traditional folk costumes, often as the opposite gender.<\/p>\n

A part of the same heritage is the UNESCO-protected Busojaras (The march of Bu\u0161ari) in Moh\u00e1cs, in the Hungarian part of Baranja. It takes place in mid-February, with the event reaching its peak on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Two cities that live like one, at least during the carnival season – Valpovo and Beli\u0161\u0107e<\/strong>, will once again join forces and on February 22.<\/strong> they will erase the border on the meadow that connects them. That will mark the 7. \u201eLedina\u201c manifestation, with the announcement of yet another \u201cKara\u0161i\u010dka Carnival Republic\u201d<\/a>, a rich entertainment program, and the burning of Pust, who is the culprit for all the misfortunes that befell the twin towns in the past year.<\/p>\n

In 2025,\u00a0 Bu\u0161e will take place in the Danube-based\u00a0 villages of Dra\u017e, Gaji\u0107, Topolje, and Dubo\u0161evica. The largest number of traditional masks can be seen in the procession of beautiful and fearsome Bu\u0161e in Dra\u017e<\/strong>, where the fun continues throughout the manifestation of \u00a0Fa\u0161ange \u2013 Baranja Bu\u0161e event and the Bagpipe Festival<\/a>, lasting from February 27. until March 4.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Traditionally, the Baranja fa\u0161ange would last until Carnival Tuesday, so in Baranja, not far from the town of Beli Manastir<\/strong>, you can visit Carnival horseback riding with the Bu\u0161e in Branjin Vrh<\/a> on March 1<\/strong>. From March 2. to March 4., the most visited Petara\u010dke Bu\u0161e<\/a> reign in Baranjsko Petrovo Selo<\/strong>. Meanwhile, the Carnival horseback riding in Popovac<\/a> will take place on March 4<\/strong>., with the highlight of the day, which is always reserved for the afternoon hours and the early evening, featuring the ceremonial burning of the “Fa\u0161nik” \u2013 a doll blamed for all the bad things in the past year, followed by a dinner for all participants.<\/p>\n

A very interesting carnival event of the Baranja Hungarians, “Kakas\u00fct\u00e9s”<\/a>, will be held on March 2, 2025<\/strong>. in the village of Vardarac<\/strong>, and it consists of a festive procession of horse-drawn carriages that \u2013 along with screaming, squealing and singing – moves through the village streets, during which young men (dressed in costumes and masks representing roosters) get off the carts and “dance” around girls and women who stand in front of the houses and welcome the cheerful procession.<\/p>\n
