Start your Vukovar tour where it all began, at the Vučedol Culture Museum. Learn all about why the civilization settled in the area five thousand years ago and why they were just as cool and important as the ancient Egyptians. Find out the significance of the Vučedol dove, and to round it all off enjoy some exceptional rooftop views or go down and touch the Danube. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, individual tickets are priced at €6, while children under 7 can enter for free.

For the perfect Vukovar day itinerary, simply follow the road from Vučedol towards the city center. Stop by the Memorial Cemetery and light a candle for those who gave their lives for the Homeland. If you’re looking to know more about Vukovar’s hero history, pay a visit to its memorial locations, such as the Ovčara Memorial Center (open every day 9-5), the Memorial Center of Homeland War (open every day 9-5) or the Vukovar Hospital Museum (open on working days 7-3).

Do not miss Vukovar’s most famous landmark, the Water tower. Climb the 198 steps or take the panoramic lift to the top. The multimedia exhibition on the battle for Vukovar will help you truly understand the sacrifice of Vukovar’s heroes, while the Danube easily demonstrates its grandness from below. You can visit the Water Tower every day from 9 am to 9 pm. If you take the stairs up, the ticket will be slightly cheaper at €8,50, while a ticket including the panoramic lift costs €10.

From there, take the side streets and visit the Franciscan monastery and church on the hill, or follow the main road to arrive at the baroque streets in the city’s historical core. Take a right, and you will find your way to the riverbank. Follow the newly built promenade along the Danube or take the main street through the city center. Walk past the square and the famous Grand Hotel and cross the border between Syrmia and Slavonia on the memorial Jean-Michel Nicolier bridge.

Buy a pair of the emblematic Borovo shoes, check out one of the many stunning street art murals and head straight on to see the birth house of Vukovar’s most famous scientist, Nobel prize winner Lavoslav Ružička. To find out all you need to know about the city, visit the Eltz manor which houses the Vukovar Municipal Museum. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 6 pm, individual tickets are priced at €6, while children under 7 can enter for free.

Finally, for a taste of local cuisine, be it river fish of one of the hearty meat dishes, check out the traditional Vukovarska kuća nestled in the middle of Vukovar’s green oasis, the forest park Adica, or head to Stari Toranj near the riverbank. For a modern approach to tradition with innovative dishes in a baroque setting, check out Domestic House Lola in the very city center. Don’t skip a scoop of the best ice cream in town at Đani’s either.
