Bearing in mind the former soldiers' love for a good drop and the wine-growing hills of Slavonia and Baranja, there can only be one answer- Wine square.. During the time of the Habsburg, later Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, Baranja wine intended for innkeepers and soldiers was delivered here every Saturday and Wednesday. And today? Today, right next to the Water Gate Fortress, the only preserved one of the four built at the beginning of the 18th century, is located by the Regional Wine Cellar. It is a place where you can taste the wines of the Slavonski-Baranja vineyards and earn the diploma of a hardened hedonist. Here, the spirit of history and culture of winemaking meets the lifestyle of contemporary urban connoisseurs. Trying to resist them is a futile task.

The wines of Slavonia and Baranja have become more attractive and appreciated in recent years. The region is dominated by four vineyards: western or Feričanci, southern or Đakovo, northern or Baranja and eastern or Erdut. Due to its impressive position on the Danube, the vineyards of Baranja and Erdut are also considered the homeland of "wine from the Danube".

Bor or "wine" and anya or "mother", are Hungarian words from which the name of the province of Baranja - the mother of wine - was coined. Woven into every pore of its identity, the culture of wine in Baranja is visible at almost every step. However, in some places it is particularly impressive. Discover the viewpoint on Banski Brdo, on one of the most beautiful Croatian wine roads. Peek into its center, the cellar in Kneževo Vinograd, the largest in Croatia. Then stop in Suza, a picturesque village where the eyes are watering with beauty. Do not be afraid of emotions, they are the characteristic of true hedonists! After all, your emotional compass will be "aligned" by a visit to another Baranja wine pearl, the Danube village of Zmajevac. In its gators - cellars dug in the water hollowed out by the surduk gorges, the mother of wine will reveal to you all the secrets of her white and black magic: Graševina, pinot white and gris, traminac, chardonnay, Rhenish Riesling and sauvignon; then frankovka, cabernet franc and sauvignon, merlot and pinot noir. Along the way, you might learn something about Red Marta, the evil ruler of the vineyards, and the godmother of Zmajevac (the Hungarian name of the village is Vörösmart or Red Marta).

Every year at the beginning of June, Gator Fest is held in Kneževi Vinogradi, Suza and Zmajevac, a festival of good wine, pleasant living and useful activities! Namely, the organizers also think about the health of their visitors, for whom they organize a relaxing event every year Baranja Wine & Walk tour.

The tradition of Đakovo vineyards dates back to the Middle Ages, and it has retained its mysticism and perfection of taste until today. In addition to the Archbishop's Palace, the basement of the Archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek is located directly next to the Đakovo Cathedral. In it you can taste the famous Đakovo mass wines (they make every mass celebration even more divine). Among the white varieties in the Đakovo vineyard, Graševina stands out, as well as Traminac, one of the favorite varieties of eastern Croatia. In addition to them, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, Green Silvan and Rhine Riesling are also grown. The main black varieties are zweigelt, cabernet sauvignon and merlot.

The landscape of the Danube meander in the area of Erdut Municipality is a protected landscape, and at the same time the substrate from which famous wines with rich flavors and aromas are obtained. The vine has been cultivated and worshiped here since the time of the Roman Empire. Today, the Erdut vineyard is dominated by Graševina, and in addition to it, Traminac, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Ottonel Muscat, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, and Rhine Riesling stand out. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt are grown from black varieties. Among the several events that represent Erdut's wine and gastronomy offer, the medieval Wine City Erdut fair stands out. Through it, two important determinants of the local area are united every May - medieval heritage and wine culture.

One of Europe's largest wooden barrels is carefully preserved and used in the Erdut cellars. As big as a one-room apartment, it can hold 75,000 liters of graševina!

Viticulture tradition since the 13th century it also cares for the area around Feričanci, located on the slopes of Mount Krndija. The top wines there are still produced in the traditional way today. In the Feričanci vineyard, the ratio of growing black and white varieties is almost equal, although the black Frankovka variety stands out in first place. In addition to it and Graševina, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris are also grown, i.e. from the black varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir.

The Austro-Hungarian countries were connected by Kaiser & König, but also frankovka, a wine variety spread from Austria and the Czech Republic, to Vojvodina and Romania. Even though it originates from the white variety Belina large (German. Heunisch weisser), it is a black variety and the best red wine of continental Croatia.

In addition to traditional wine celebrations such as January's Vinceška or Vinkovo, there is an increasing number of modern wine events that combine hedonism, art and active rest. Among them stand out: Osijek's WineOs and Evenings of Wine and Art, Erdut's Wine & Bike Tour Erdut, Vinski Bor Marathon in Zmajevac and Frankovka Festival in Feričanci.
