58. Đakovački vezovi – Festival of traditional culture

The Đakovački vezovi is a well-known and established manifestation of authentic folk culture. In 2023, it was declared the Tourist Event of the Year by the Croatian Tourist Board, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and the Croatian Chamber of Commerce.

The first Đakovački vezovi was held on July 2nd and 3rd, 1967, as a special tourism-cultural event marking the International Year of Tourism. The initiator for the establishment of the Đakovački vezovi was Dr. Zvonimir Benčević, and the first event was a great success among people from Slavonia and beyond.

The main event of the Đakovački vezovi is held every year in July. It features original folklore primarily from Slavonia, Baranja, and Western Syrmia, as well as other parts of Croatia, along with accompanying events such as the opening of various exhibitions, equestrian events, and other cultural and tourist events. The manifestation has an international character, gathering authentic folk groups from all over the world.

Every summer, the Đakovački vezovi, the most important review of Croatian folklore creativity, attracts tens of thousands of participants.

Various folk events such as Mali vezovi, church folk singing, the grand opening, Đakovština in song and dance, Guests in song and dance, the grand parade through the streets of Đakovo, the international folklore review, the Croatian folklore review, the Slavonia and Baranja folklore review, and the closing ceremony “Slavonijo, zemljo plemenita” with the selection of the best traditional costume are part of the festival. The selection of the girl and the young woman (the selection of the young man was introduced in later years) in the most beautiful costume has been an integral part of the Vezovi since its inception in 1967.

Horse sport enthusiasts find satisfaction at the hippodrome, where an international equestrian competition is held every year.

The Đakovački vezovi festival primarily nurtures and maintains the tradition and authenticity of this region but also of other regions of Croatia and abroad (folk costumes, folk dances, traditional hairstyles, horse breeding, gastronomy).

The entire city participates in the event, with an awareness of the importance of this manifestation and its cultural and artistic significance deeply rooted in all the inhabitants of this area, a fact of which we are very proud.

The main events are the grand opening, folklore group performances, and most importantly, the grand parade through the city’s streets and the closing ceremony under the title “Slavonijo, zemljo plemenita” with a rich music program and the selection of the best traditional costume.

All events at the Đakovački vezovi are presented in the “Review of the Đakovački vezovi,” which has been published since 1970.

Since 2018, the event has had an official partner country and a website: www.djakovacki-vezovi.hr.

With a rich publishing activity to this day, the Đakovački vezovi has grown into one of the largest events of its kind in Croatia.

Đakovo has always been called and is the “Heart of Slavonia.” A city with a rich history, continental tourism with the natural beauties of the heart of Slavonia…the magic of gastronomy, sound, and customs…which we encompass, celebrate, and preserve from oblivion through this event.
