HEAD ON EAST! Get inspired for a a city break, discover Osijek and more

Forget what you thought you knew about eastern Croatia. Slavonia and Baranja aren't just endless fields, meat dishes, and tamburica music — they are also home to some of Europe’s most impressive cathedrals, concerts under the stars, stunning Art Nouveau architecture, and museums that speak of aristocracy, industry, and science. It’s time to head on east for a different kind of city break.

In Osijek, it all starts at Tvrđa — the city’s baroque heart on the banks of the Drava River, a vibrant hub of history, nightlife, and cultural life. From here, the longest riverfront promenade in Croatia stretches out, where locals cycle, jog, walk their dogs, and enjoy lazy afternoons at café terraces. For a dose of tranquility, hop on the eco-ferry known as kompa and cross to the left bank of the Drava. Take a break at one of the beach bars on the iconic Copacabana beach, where the view of Osijek’s skyline pairs perfectly with a freshly tapped, unfiltered local beer.

The crown jewel of Đakovo is the majestic Cathedral of St. Peter, often described as “the most beautiful from Venice to Istanbul.” Equally impressive is the Đakovo Stud Farm, one of the oldest Lipizzaner studs in Europe, giving the town an air of aristocratic elegance. In the summer, Đakovo transforms into a living stage during the Đakovački Vezovi Festival — a celebration of tradition, music, and local cuisine that draws visitors from around the world.

For a hands-on experience, visit a traditional blacksmith who keeps ancient craftsmanship alive and try your hand at shaping metal. Wine lovers will appreciate the Misna Vina cellar located right beside the cathedral. To round it off, Bačva Wine Bar offers the finest local wines in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

Castles, Museums, Stories

Našice, once home to the noble Pejačević family, is a town of music and quiet elegance. The Našice Heritage Museum, located in the beautifully restored Pejačević Castle, offers a glimpse into aristocratic life, with a special section dedicated to Dora Pejačević, Croatia’s first female composer. For a contemporary twist, check out the local brewery Stric, leading the craft beer scene at the foot of Mount Krndija.

As you muse about blue blood and grand traditions, ask yourself: when was the last time you truly treated yourself? At the newly renovated Kurija Mihalović in Feričanci, now a heritage hotel, indulge in a romantic weekend getaway complete with spa, pool, fine dining, and a glass of excellent wine for a proper aristocratic experience.

Life around castles also thrives in Donji Miholjac and Valpovo. The grand parks of the Mailath and Normann-Prandau estates come alive in summer with festivals celebrating everything from cheese and wine to craft beer, hip-hop, and rock music. The region’s industrial heritage lives on at the Belišće Museum, where the lovingly restored train named Ćiro reminds visitors of the area’s rich railroad history.

Culture Plus

A little further east, in Dalj, you’ll find the Cultural and Scientific Center Milutin Milanković, dedicated to the great scientist who explained the Earth’s climatic cycles and ranks among NASA’s 15 greatest minds. His birthplace, garden, and observatory still stand proudly in his honour. In Aljmaš, a peaceful reminder of its more recent history awaits. Here, Croatia’s largest Marian shrine has turned a former military bunker into a moving memorial center and art gallery.

In the nearby Baranja area, the Tikveš Presentation and Education Center tells another story, that of Croatia’s famous hunting lodges nestled within the Kopački Rit Nature Park. After exploring, unwind at the nearby Lounge Bar Lopoč, or head up to Panorama in Batina. Here, alongside the delicious Baranjske slastice cakes and desserts with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, you’ll be treated to some of the most beautiful, soul-soothing views in the region.
